Women Bakery

Our vision for the women bakery is to establish a training facility where we teach women how to bake bread, cakes and cookies with Prosopis flour. Lander Prosopis aims to create access to gainful employment for women and to sell nutritious, affordable breads through profitable bakeries in Somaliland. By identifying strong women, we will recruit some of Somaliland’s most vulnerable women who are motivated to provide for themselves, their family, and their community. We will equip those selected women with the skills they need to bake and run a bakery. The bakery will be run by women, the profit of the sales will go to providing salary to workers and back into the facility. This will in the end generate an income that will lead to regular pay and not just temporary pay. In Somaliland the women are the ones who provide for their household, while men are wasting away eating khat. Through this income generating initiative for women, baking will be a way of providing a livelihood for their families and in the end the flour will provide people with the nutrition they need to develop a health body and good living.

The benefits of Mesquite flour

Mesquite (Prosopis) flour is both gluten free and high protein (about 11-17% protein), making it a good alternative for people looking to avoid gluten and white flours. Mesquite is a high-protein, highly nutritious food, rich in iron, lysine, manganese, potassium, and zinc. Studies have shown that diets rich in potassium, an essential mineral and electrolyte, can help to prevent stroke and high blood pressure, and increase bone mineral density. Mesquite flour is also low on the glycemic index, which can help to keep blood sugars controlled, and is gluten-free.
