Prosopis Juliflora Seapods

Lander Prosopis have had the pleasure of working with 10 different villages in and around Hargeisa during February till June 2019. We were able to hire 380 people collectively in those 10 villages collecting 5,400 kg of animal feed as ordered by Welthungerhilfe (WHH). The villagers collected, dried and milled the pods, making high quality animal feed and most importantly reducing the spread of prosopis at the same time. For each 25 kg sack of pods collected and milled, around 50,000 seeds are destroyed or two million less prosopis plants for every ton of pods milled. In the long run this is how we will be able to control the excessiveness of the tree through village training and creating employment at the same time.

Having said that, the villagers were able to collect 8,100 bags of clean animal feed. Each bag the fieldworkers collected, we paid them $0.50. On average each worker earned 10.65 dollars. Bear in mind that some fieldworkers worked more than a day and they would earn more. The regular pickers were women. In Somaliland, the women are the backbone of their own household, and at Lander Prosopis we want to help the mothers so they can earn regular pay and not temporary cash for work. Thanks to WHH the villages were able to earn 4,050 dollars that we gave back to those community as it got shared between 380 people on average each picked 21 bags.

Making animal feed from milled prosopis pods also has huge potential impact, considering the country’s large livestock sector, in Somaliland livestock is around 70% and its dependence on imported animal feed. By using Prosopis Juliflora seapods we can cut the imports of animal feed and supply internally in Somaliland.
